  • Cheyanne Corley, Navajo, of Farmington High School in Farmington, New Mexico, recently signed with the Lady Indians of Haskell Indian Nations University. Farmington head coach Michael Switch said Corley will bring leadership skills to the court and will be ready to play whenever she is called upon. Congrats to Cheyanne! (Farmington’s Cheyanne Corley to join Piedra Vista’s Amanda Chee at Haskell Indian Nations University)
  • NFL Lineman Levi Horn, Northern Cheyenne, was waived by the Chicago Bears on the 14th but Horn didn’t have to sit around to long as he was signed by the Vikings on the 18th. Levi played with the Bears for the past two years and is an Ambassador for the Nike N7 initiative. Good luck Levi this season! (Levi Horn Picked up by The Minnesota Vikings)
  • Probably the biggest signing of the week was Melvin Langstaff, Sioux/Chippewa, who signed with Lake Region State College. Langstaff averaged 38.4 points per game this season, scored 1,944 points during his career, and he was named Mr. Basketball for the state of North Dakota. Not bad of a senior year. (Mr. Basketball commits to Lake Region)

Top News/Highlights:

  • Our top news choice of last week was indeed the re-signing of Levi Horn with the Minnesota Vikings. Horn played for two years with the Chicago Bears and speaks every chance he gets with Native American youth across the country thru the Litefoot Entertainment Group of speakers. Horn said to NDNSPORTS.COM, “I’m looking forward to play for a team with great tradion an pride. I thank them for giving me a a chance an will look to improve my skills an hopefully contribute to the Vikings success next season.” (Levi Horn Picked up by The Minnesota Vikings)
  • Congratulations to Chinle High School senior Rolonda Jumbo (Navajo) who swept the Arizona Division III state titles in the 1600 & 3200 meter run at the Arizona State Track & Field Championships. Despite coming down with an illness earlier in the week Jumbo was able to grab her 10th and 11th state titles respectively for her high school career. Jumbo will take her talents to Northern Arizona University in the fall. (Rolonda Jumbo Wins State Titles in Arizona)
  • The 17th Annual Oklahoma Indian All-State selections were made and released to us and it has many of the state of Oklahoma’s top Native American basketball players. Now in it’s 17th year, the Oklahoma Indian All-State plays an “All-Star” game of the states top NDN players for girls and boys on June 16th on the campus of Oklahoma Wesleyan University in Bartelsville, Oklahoma. Tip-off time for the girls will be at 6:00 PM cst with the boys to follow. You don’t want to miss these games! (17th Annual Oklahoma Indian All-State Basketball Selections Announced)
  • Proud Heritage, is a great article about the influence Native American athletes have had on the University of Oklahoma football program.  Here’ s a quote from the story “From Key Wolf over 100 years ago to Sam Bradford, Native Americans have long played key roles in the OU football program,” said University of Oklahoma President David Boren. “Personal courage and steadiness under pressure, which are important attributes of native culture, have helped the Sooners establish the greatest tradition in college football. OU is extremely proud of our Native American heritage.”  The story was written by Jay Upchurch  editor-in-chief of Sooner Spectator Magazine, it’s definitelya magazine you want to pick up! (Proud Heritage: A closer look at the influence Native Americans have had on Sooner football over the last century)
  • “Crooked Arrows” officially opened last week in select theaters on May 18th and set to open nationally on June 1st. Former Superman actor Brandon Routh (part Kickapoo, who knew?) plays Joe Logan, a Sunaquat Indian and former lacrosse star who’s now a sell-out and a real estate hotshot who wants to sell tribal land to a casino operator. The tribal elders agree, on the condition that Logan coach the tribe’s moribund team, part of a spiritual quest to restore Sunaquat pride, and Logan’s own neglected heritage (how fitting huh?). Anyway, check out this review! (‘Crooked Arrows’ scores with story of underdog American Indian lacrosse team)
  • And last but not least, Chris Wondolowski, Kiowa Tribe, was recently called up to the USA National Soccer team for tryouts this week. He and 22 other MLS soccer players will try and make the Olympic squad in hopes of qualifying for a bid to the 2012 Olympics in London. Good luck this week to Chris!
