by Earthquakes forward Chris Wondolowski (Kiowa Tribe) has been called to a U.S. national team training camp in Orlando, Fla., where Major League Soccer’s leading scorer will try to make the 23-player roster.
Wondolowski left Sunday just hours after San Jose’s disappointing 1-1 draw against the Columbus Crew the previous night. The Danville native blamed himself for the result after missing a penalty kick in the 21st minute.
U.S. coach Jurgen Klinsmann will name a team that will compete in three friendlies and two 2014 World Cup qualifiers from May 26 to June 12. Wondolowski was among 11 players added to the U.S. training camp roster Sunday.
The Quakes (7-2-2) will face the Los Angeles Galaxy on Wednesday at the Home Depot Center without Wondolowski, who has 11 goals in 12 matches. The Galaxy will not have Landon Donovan and Robbie Keene, who also got national team call ups. Keene plays for Ireland.
If Wondolowski makes the team he also will miss San Jose’s game next Sunday at Sporting Kansas City — the final MLS match before the FIFA break.
“Wondo has been in terrific form for us and we are happy to see him called up,” Earthquakes coach Frank Yallop stated in a prepared statement. “Hopefully he will continue his success from our league onto the international level and put a few in the back of the net.”
Wondolowski became the fastest player to 10 goals in MLS history, reaching double digits in San Jose’s ninth game. The De La Salle High
graduate made his national team debut last year and has appeared in seven games.
“Chris has been terrific this season and he deserves to get his chance on the international stage,” stated Earthquakes general manager John Doyle, who played in the 1988 Olympics and 1990 World Cup for the United States. “Any time you get to suit up for your country, it’s a major honor.”
Wondolowski is one of six MLS players invited to the camp. Klinsmann has called upon the country’s ideal goal scorers, including Juan Agudelo of Chivas USA, Jozy Altidore of AZ Alkmaar and Clint Dempsey of Fulham.
