Voice of Oklahoma State Baseball and Wrestling Rex Holt (Choctaw) Reflects on Time with the Cowboys

Rex Holt Enjoys Broadcasting Career with Oklahoma State

By Tyler Jones, @TylerJonesLive

For the last three decades, Oklahoma State fans have the voice of Rex Holt come through their radios, calling Cowboy Athletics. Holt has been heard on the Oklahoma State Cowboy Radio Network for the last 33 years calling Cowboys Baseball and 29 years calling Cowboys Wrestling.

Holt’s career started as a writer in Stillwater, but it wasn’t too long after that Holt found something he liked better. “Through the same media company, I got the chance to try calling baseball games with Bill Platt on KSPI. I quickly changed my major from journalism to broadcasting.”

Holt graduated from Oklahoma State in the early 1970’s and stayed with the program ever since. After Platt retired, Holt became the full-time voice for Oklahoma State Baseball and hasn’t looked back since. “I’ve been full-time with Oklahoma State Baseball for 18 years and have stayed because I felt comfortable, right at home at OSU.”

The two head coaches for the sports Holt calls are both people he’s very familiar with. “I called John Smith (OSU Wrestling Head Coach) and Josh Holliday’s games when they played at Oklahoma State and their both now the head coaches of their programs.” Smith is in his 16th year as Head Coach of Oklahoma State Wrestling, while Holliday is in his 3rd year as manager of Cowboys Baseball.

In Holt’s time at Oklahoma State, he’s been able to see some great things. The Cowboys Wrestling teams have won 34 team national championships and Holt called seven of the championships. Since 1981, Oklahoma State Baseball has been in the NCAA Tournament 32 times and have finished runner-up in the College World Series three times (1981, 1987 & 1990).

While Holt is member of the Choctaw Nation of Oklahoma, he’s not the only member of an Oklahoma Native American Tribe on the Oklahoma State Radio Network. Holt says, “Matt Davis has been calling games with me for years and he’s Muskogee (Creek), while I’m Choctaw. We’re known as Rex and the Chief, two NDNs calling games for the Cowboys.”

Besides calling Oklahoma State Baseball and Wrestling, Holt stays busy in Stillwater. Holt is also the play-by-play voice of Stillwater High School Football and can be heard daily on “The Game with Rex Holt.” The Game airs Monday-Friday from 9am-11am on KSPI in Stillwater.

Holt’s broadcasts of Oklahoma State Baseball and Wrestling is heard around the State of Oklahoma on the Oklahoma State Cowboys Radio Network from Learfield Sports. All events can be heard on the flagship station of Oklahoma State Athletics, KSPI 780 AM in Stillwater.
