USD runs its winning streak to six with the win over Lions: Lauren Schad (Cheyenne River Sioux) with 7 Kills for Toreros

SAN DIEGO, Calif. – Behind another balanced offensive attack, the University of San Diego women’s volleyball team was able to extend its winning streak to six, with a 3-0 win over Loyola Marymount University Saturday afternoon in a West Coast Conference match at the Jenny Craig Pavilion.

With the win, the Toreros improve to 15-7 overall, remain in sole possession of second place in the WCC at 8-2, and have now split the series with the Lions for the season. With the loss, LMU falls to 17-5 overall and 5-5 in the WCC.

Alaysia Brown led all players with 13 kills on 28 attempts, while only committing four errors to hit for a .321 clip. Jayden Kennedy also had a great match with nine kills on 14 attempts to hit for a .571 clip, while Lauren Schad (Cheyenne River Sioux) added in seven kills.

In the first set, USD came out firing on all cylinders, as a Brown kill sparked an 11-6 USD run right out of the gates, forcing the Lions into a timeout. Out of the break, USD continued to push ahead and would eventually build up a lead to as many as 10 at 21-11 on an Schad kill, before settling for a 25-16 win.

In the second set, the Toreros grabbed the first three points, and that caused LMU to call an early timeout. USD then continued to dominate, as they would slowly pull ahead and would go on to take a 14-9 lead, which forced the Lions into their finale timeout. LMU then managed to keep things close for the remainder of the frame, and pulled back to within two at 22-20, however USD was just too strong to overcome, as San Diego took set two by a final of 25-20.

In the third and final set, LMU managed to grab the early momentum and held the lead for the first quarter of the frame. Then with USD trailing 9-8, a Kennedy kill sparked a 6-0 Torero run to give USD all the momentum and a 15-9 lead, forcing the Lions into their final timeout. USD never looked back, as they cruised their way to a 25-17 win.

The Toreros will return to action on Thursday, as they travel to the Bay Area to take on the university of San Francisco in a 7 p.m. WCC match at War memorial Gym.
