Recruiting/Signings:

  • Jesse Brown, Wind River reservation, signed with Northwest College in Powell, Wyoming this past week. The 6 foot 2A All-State selection averaged 15.7 points , 6.7 rebounds, 5.9 assists and 3.8 steals per game in his senior campaign. Jesse is the 2nd player to sign a basketball letter of intent out of WRHS. Tyson Lonebear signed last month with Central Wyoming College. (Jesse Brown to make NWCC hoops home)
  • Chris Wondolowski, Kiowa Tribe, was recently named to the 23 member U.S.A National Soccer team this past week. MLS soccer leading scorer was named with 4 other MLS players who will no begin play to qualify for the Olympics in London later this year. Congratulations to “Wondo” on an outstanding season so far. Top News/Highlights:

  • Probably the biggest news of the week was the lunch of the Nike N7 2012 summer collection which included the much anticipated Nike N7 Zoom KD IV shoes by Kevin Durant.  Debuting in a home game last month in the OKC Thunder game versus the LA Clippers, followed by a Native youth kids camp the next day, the KD IV shoes are the anchor of a collection that is sure to make heads turn this summer (Nike N7 Summer 2012 Collection Launches May 25)
  • The College Football Foundation announced this week that Native American football coach William “Lone Star” Dietz (Sioux) will be enshrined into the 2012 College Football Hall of Fame later this year. Dietz, a former teammate of Jim Thorpe, had an illustrious college football coaching career that included major head jobs at Washington State University, Purdue University, Louisiana Tech University, University of Wyoming, Haskell Indian Institute.   • For the first time in a professional golf event, three Native American golfers tee’d off together in a competition at the Firekeeper Traditions tournament in Mayetta, Kansas. Notah Begay, III, Gene Webster, Jr., and Steve Mcdonald all competed at the afore mentioned National Pro Golf Tour event. Check out our video interviews in this story.   • Faylyn Beyale, Navajo, added more awards to her collection this season, already named the RMAC conference player of the year this season. Faylyn was recently named to the All-Central Central team by the National Golf Coaches Association. Beyale was the top finisher at the NCAA II Wester Region division a few weeks. Congrats to Faylyn this season and look foward to an oustanding Senior season next year! (Faylyn Beyale Selected to All-Central Golf Team Region by NGCA)

Announcements:

  • The Jim Thorpe Native American games are fast approaching and it’s time to start figuring out where you are going to play your event at or plans to watch events. We have the schedules posted online and will continued to update the schedule of events as they are posted by the JT games committe. (2012 Jim Thorpe Native American Games Event Schedules)
  • We were contacted this past week by a representative from the Mizuno corporation asking to post information about a special contest they are hosting online and in an attempt get more Native American involved with the contest. If you are a Volleyball player or fan then you should check this out! (Mizuno looking for Native American Volleyball Athletes to Participate in Online Contest)
