College of Saint Mary basketball signs two transfer students; Tyler Sumpter (Cheyenne/Arapaho) and Ember Sloan (Navajo)

OMAHA, Neb. – College of Saint Mary Basketball Coach Jesse Flanagan is proud to announce the signing of two transfer students. Both Tyler Sumpter and Ember Sloan will be joining the Flames in the fall.

Sumpter and Sloan are both currently students at Haskell Indian Nations University.

Sumpter, the daughter of Scott Sumpter and Janet Davis, is a 5-10 guard. She went to Edward C. Reed High School in Sparks, Nev. Following high school she went to Bismarck State College and then Haskell. She plans to major in secondary education at CSM.

“Tyler comes from a great family that is very supportive of her educational and basketball endeavors,” Flanagan said. “On the court Tyler can flat-out play. She is an outstanding shooter, however she can score in a variety of ways. She is an all-american-type player who has competed at the highest level and has taken her teams to national tournaments. I can’t wait to have the opportunity to coach her.”

In high school Sumpter was an all-region and all-league player and helped her team to a 4A Nevada High School State Championship. She is an NIAA 4A state record holder in most 3-pointers made in a single game in all classes with 14.

Sumpter says USA Olympian Billy Mills is her favorite sports hero and says she enjoys traveling and sporting events as her hobbies. Her greatest sports moment to date is “leading Haskell women’s basketball to a first-ever conference title and also winning the Nevada High School 4A State basketball title.”

She’s excited to continue her education and athletic career at CSM.

“During my campus visit the coaches, faculty and student were very supportive,” Sumpter said.

Sloan is the daughter of Jim Begay and Rita Sloan. She’s a 5-5 guard from Page High School. She plans to study elementary education at CSM.

“Ember is an outstanding student-athlete who will play a major role on our team next season,” Flanagan said. “On the court she can play multiple positions. She is most comfortable at the point, but she can also slide over and play the wing because she can shoot the ball. I really love how efficient Ember is. She plays within herself and lets the game come to her.”

In high school, Sloan and her teammates were Arizona Division 3 State Basketball Champions and she was All-Division First Team and Navajo All-Star. She earned similar honors in volleyball at Page. Sloan also ran cross country in high school.

She said winning the AIA Division 3 State Championship was her greatest sports moment to date and she lists Steve Nash as her favorite sports hero. Her hobbies include spending time with family and friends.

“College of Saint Mary has a wonderful education program and I want to continue my basketball career at CSM,” Sloan said.
