MADISON – Yes, it’s Aug. 5. And yes, Selection Sunday is 221 days away. But ESPN says it’s never to early to be thinking about March Madness so on Wednesday morning their Bracketologist, Joe Lunardi, released his first projected bracket for the 2016 NCAA tournament.
The University of Wisconsin, who has made the last two Final Fours, checks in as a 4-seed in the South Region. The Badgers must replace five players from their rotation of last year’s team that made it to the national title game but they do have some solid building blocks to work with in juniors Nigel Hayes and Bronson Koenig (Ho-Chunk Nation).
Wisconsin is one of six Big Ten teams in the field, joined by Maryland (1-seed), Indiana (3-seed), Michigan State (4-seed), Michigan (6-seed) and Purdue (8-seed).
Along with the teams they’ll play in conference action, several UW non-conference teams also show up in the bracket. That includes Syracuse (11-seed), who will the Badgers opponent in the Big Ten/ACC Challenge, and Oklahoma (2-seed), who Wisconsin will face in Norman on Nov. 29. UW could also see Duke (2-seed) or Georgetown (6-seed) in the 2K Classic in New York City.
