Ava Battese (Comanche) Scores 12 Points as Cameron falls to No. 20 Angelo State in first round of LSC Tournament

RICHARDSON, Texas – The no. seven seed Cameron women’s basketball team fell in the first round of the Lone Star Conference Tournament, 88-71 to the no. 2 seed and the no. 20 ranked Angelo State Rambelles on Thursday afternoon.

The game started with an 8-0 run from ASU, as CU went 0-10 in the first four minutes of play. They got on the board via a layup and a free throw from Jamie Bonnarens. Another scoring drought allowed the Rambelles to extend 14-3 with 3:22 left in the quarter. A Brittany Hill three got the Aggies going again, however ASU closed out the quarter with a tree pointer to give them the 22-11 advantage.

Cameron came out firing in the second quarter, as another three from Hill and one from Ava Battese (Comanche Nation) helped cut the score to 27-23 with 7:09 left in the quarter. The Rambelles matched them shot for shot and by the 4:26 mark they were back on top by 10. ASU closed out the half going 5-7, that was capped off by a three pointer from Keanna Kelly to give them a 44-22 lead at the half.

CU shot just 29.3 percent from the field in the first 20 minutes of play, going 5-15 from three and 3-4 from the charity stripe. Bonnarens led CU with 11 points, while Battese had nine, and Hill had eight.

Angelo State shot 53.1 percent from the field in the first half, going 6-13 from the perimeter and 4-5 at the foul line. Christina Robinson led them with 12 points, going 4-4 from the field and 3-3 from three-point range.

The Aggies opened the second half with a three pointer from Battese, but a 15-4 run ASU put them up by 22 with 7:09 left in the third. CU responded with a 7-0 run of their own to cut the score to 61-46 at the 5:20 mark. The Rambelles answered with a 14-1 run to end the quarter up 75-47.

In the fourth, Angelo State improved their lead to 34 with six minutes left in the game. The Aggies slowly cut away at the lead ending the game on an 18-1 run, but the deficit was too large as they lost 88-71.

Cameron shot 33.3 percent from the field and the perimeter in the game, while going 10-18 from the free throw line. They recorded 10 steals and forced 23 turnovers. Bonnarens finished with a game-high 24 points to go along with eight rebounds, as Battese and Cristina Soriano each chipped in 12 points.

The Rambelles shot 46.7 percent from the field, while going 8-22 from three and hitting 24 of their 30 free throw attempts. Bria Freirson led them with 19 points, while Robinson finished with 18.

CU finished the season with an 11-16 record while ASU moves to 23-4 with the win.
