Ashton Locklear (Lumbee Tribe) headed to the 2016 Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil as one of three alternate athletes

SAN JOSE, CA  – Ashton Locklear (Lumbee Tribe) came close to earning one of five coveted spots on the US Women’s Gymnastics team.

She  will now be headed to the 2016 Olympic competition in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil as one of three alternate athletes for the gymnastics team

She trains out of the Everest Gymnastics in Huntersville, North Carolina.

The gym’s Facebook page had a message of congratulations and photo posted on it early Monday morning.

“What an amazing adventure!” the post read.

Fourteen competitors faced off at Sunday’s U.S. Olympic trial in San Jose, CA.

Simone Biles, Aly Raisman, Laurie Hernandez, Gabby Douglas and Madison Kocian were named by the selection committee to represent Team USA at next month’s Olympic Games in Rio.

Ashton Locklear, Ragan Smith and MyKayla Skinner will serve as the three replacement athletes for Team USA should any member of the team become ill or injured up-to and during the competitions.

  1. One day my little Aleut/Eskasoni granddaughter may be there, as well. Her focus and love of gymnastics grows each year. Congratulations to both the team and the alternates. Congratulations to each one who trained to make this team, you have a lifetime of strength….
