LETHBRIDGE, Alta. — The Lethbridge Polytechnic Kodiaks announced Wednesday that Talon Weasel Head (Kainai Nation) has joined the men’s basketball roster for the 2026-27 season, bringing the Lethbridge point guard back to his hometown.
Weasel Head returns home after spending the 2025-26 season with the United Tribes Technical College Thunderbirds in North Dakota, where he earned First Team Defensive All-Region honours and was named Defensive Player of the Year. He averaged 6.8 points and 4.7 assists per game last season for the Thunderbirds.
Before heading south, Weasel Head was a key member of the St. Mary’s Saints program, helping the team capture the 5A Alberta provincial championship in 2024. He also represented Team Alberta in 2023, winning a gold medal at the North American Indigenous Games.
“I bring leadership, a defensive game, play making and scoring,” Weasel Head said. “I’m looking forward to playing with shooters.” He said the chance to return home and keep developing his game in the Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference (ACAC) played a major role in his decision.
Kodiaks head coach Ryan Heggie praised the addition to his backcourt. “Talon has the ability to play open court and half court point guard, and he has a high IQ for either,” Heggie said.
The homecoming carries extra meaning for the Weasel Head family. His father Charlton was a Kodiak on the men’s basketball team from 1996 to 1999, earning three-time ACAC all-star honours and all-Canadian recognition in 1998. For Talon, the opportunity represents both achievement and responsibility — the chance to compete at a high level, pursue his education, honour his family, and inspire other Indigenous youth.
The Kodiaks first recruited Weasel Head in 2024 before he chose United Tribes. The coaching staff reopened conversations in spring 2026, and he joined the Kodiaks for several runs before signing in June. He has enrolled in the polytechnic’s General Arts and Science program.
