SPOKANE, Wash. — In a gritty, five-set battle that saw momentum swings at every turn, Boise State fought back from two sets down to force a decisive frame, but ultimately fell just short against Gonzaga, dropping the match 3–2 (25–23, 25–18, 21–25, 20–25, 13–15).
Senior defender and former Pac-12 Defensive Player of the Week Melia Barlow anchored Boise State’s floor effort, delivering crucial back-row defense, serve receptions, pinpoint setting, and an early service ace that helped set the tempo throughout the evening.
The opening set set the stage for an intense night, featuring 10 ties and multiple lead changes. Boise State jumped to an early lead behind steady distribution from Tehya Maeva and a sharp serve from Melia Barlow, who dropped in an ace early in the set to make it 3–2 Broncos. Outside hitters Sydney Dreves and Sadie Snyder provided early firepower, connecting with Barlow and Maeva for key kills down the stretch. However, Gonzaga answered late behind Claire Wagstaff and Taylor Walsh, edging out the Broncos 25–23 in set one.
Gonzaga carried that momentum into the second frame. Despite solid defensive stands and set assists from Barlow to Snyder and Giselle Paedon, Gonzaga’s block defense stepped up, stalling the Bronco attack and taking a commanding two-set lead with a 25–18 victory.
Refusing to go down quietly, Boise State found its groove in the third set. With Jenelle Legates and Tehya Maeva orchestrating the offense, the Broncos capitalized on Gonzaga errors while middle blocker Savannah Sheridan and Dreves found open floor. Boise State pulled away late to secure the 25–21 set victory and keep their night alive.
The momentum fully shifted to the Broncos in the fourth set. Trailing 11–20, Boise State executed a dramatic comeback. Defensive coverage from Barlow allowed the Broncos to transition seamlessly into quick attacks. Barlow dished out a set to Dreves for a key kill, sparking a furious 9–2 closing run that tied the match overall with a 25–20 set four victory.
The fifth set was a dramatic, point-for-point sprint to 15. Boise State capitalized on early Gonzaga errors to tie the set 4–4, but Gonzaga’s Wagstaff and Walsh delivered key swings down the stretch to pull ahead 10–9.
Dreves delivered back-to-back late kills off passes from Maeva and Legates to bring the Broncos within one point at 13–14. However, an attack error on the final rally ended the marathon, giving Gonzaga the 15–13 win and securing the match victory.
Despite the narrow defeat, Boise State’s resilience and strong defensive leadership from Barlow highlighted a blue-collar effort that showed the team’s ability to battle under pressure.
