CHANUTE, Kan. — No. 19 Neosho County held off Coffeyville 3-2 on Wednesday, Oct. 21, taking the match 25-18, 18-25, 25-21, 23-25, 15-12 in a back-and-forth conference night.
Freshman libero Madison Mosley was the story for the Red Ravens on the defensive end, piling up 35 digs — 7.00 per set — and posting a .909 reception percentage on 12 attempts to keep Coffeyville in the match against a nationally ranked foe all night.
The match swung set by set. Neosho took the opener before Coffeyville evened things in the second, and the Panthers answered again in the third. The Red Ravens refused to go away, winning a tight fourth set 25-23 to force a decider, but Neosho closed it out 15-12 in the fifth to defend its home court.
Neosho’s leaders were Eliza Maraschin with 12 kills on .478 hitting plus eight blocks, Hedi Koppany with 11 kills, four aces and 22 digs, and Mckenzye Williamson with a team-high 25 digs. Tori Thompson ran the offense with 26 assists.
That 35-dig night is what earned Mosley the conference honor: the KJCCC named her its Division II Defensive Player of the Week for Week 10, announced Tuesday, Oct. 27, alongside Johnson County’s Sydney Rogokos and Labette’s Charlotte Watson. All three were first-time winners. Mosley had also been nominated for the defensive award the previous week.
What’s next: Coffeyville wraps the regular season tomorrow night, Wednesday, Oct. 28, hosting Labette at 6:30 p.m. at Nellis Hall for Sophomore Night, before the NJCAA Division II Plains District Tournaments begin.
