Katelyn Olson (Ojibwe) breaks Gustavus career saves record in scoreless draw with UW-Stout

SAINT PETER, Minn. — Senior goalkeeper Katelyn Olson broke the Gustavus career saves record on Wednesday, making the milestone stop in the 86th minute as the Gusties played UW-Stout to a 0-0 draw in rainy conditions at Gustie Soccer Field.

Olson played all 90 minutes — the only Gustie to go the distance — and kept the shutout intact with four second-half saves. The record-breaking stop came in the 86th minute, when she went down to her left to hold a driven shot from outside the penalty area.

The record now stands at 398 career saves, one more than Ashley Becker ’20, who set the mark across the 2015 through 2019 seasons. Olson has started every game in the last three seasons and has missed only 414:52 in four years combined.

The match was interrupted for over an hour by lightning at 43:21 of the first half. UW-Stout carried the run of play late, finishing with a 20-13 edge in shots and nine on goal, but Olson and the Gustie defense held.

The draw moved Gustavus to 4-8-5. Taylor Finney played 86 minutes behind Olson, and the senior class closed its home slate with a 15-11-8 record at Gustie Soccer Field.

Gustavus closes the season Saturday at No. 20 Carleton at 1 p.m. in Northfield.
