by (Tokyo) – The Haudenosaunee pulled away from the Ireland in the fourth quarter in a de-facto play-in game for the last quarterfinal spot on Tuesday night. The Haudenosaunee started with a spark to lead 4-0 early, but Ireland slowly chipped away until getting within one at 8-7 entering the fourth quarter.
The fourth quarter was one-way traffic, with Avery Doran firing in a free position for her fifth goal of the night, which sparked a 5-0 run to put Ireland away. Ireland had the first possession of the fourth quarter down one, but the Haudenosaunee defense denied an equalizer with the help of two saves from Paige Crandall.
Crandall finished with eight saves on 15 shots faced and was named the player of the match. Doran ended with six goals while Sierra Cockerille tallied a goal and five assists.
Paisley Cook came up in a big way for the Haudenosaunee with eight draw controls as the team won the draw advantage 13-11 against a strong Ireland unit. As a team, the Haudenosaunee generally took care of the ball and committed only six turnovers.
The Haudenosaunee will face England in the quarterfinals on Wednesday at 3:30 p.m. while Ireland will compete in placement play towards ninth place.
