Zander Kechego, 14, is from the Oneida Nation of the Thames. He is a member of the Bear Clan, Ohwkali niwakitalot^, and his Indian name is Tehalahkwa. He attends high school in London, Ontario.

“I try hard always,” said Zander. “It is easy to be a winner but it takes true skill to work as a team.”

“My culture and identity have been a huge factor in who I am today,” said Zander. “I am very proud to be ukwehuwehne (an Indian person). I used to smoke dance when I was younger and also sent to immersion school to learn Oneida language and our traditional ways of living. My mother comes from a traditional background so it’s a core value to our family.”

“I hope to make it far in hockey as an athlete,” said Zander. “I try my best to make my family, Nation and people proud no matter what I do. I would like to make to the NHL one day and give back to my community.”

“Zander is an excellent and exceptional hockey player for his age U15 AAA,” said Coach Blair Wetzel. “Potentially one of the best forwards in the entire Alliance league and in Ontario. His has great skating speed, agility, and edge work. His best asset is his puck handling and stick handling, almost like a young Pat Kane. He had an excellent shot including wrist, snap, and slap shot.  He is always willing to learn and works very hard in games.  He is one of the highest scoring players in Alliance.”

“Some obstacles and challenges I have endured has had its up’s and downs,” said Zander. “My mom has always made sure I have been good to go and play in a safe and good environment. She don’t tell me what happens behind the scenes but I know it’s not an easy task.”

Zander has been rated one of the top players of North America and his team has been rated in the top two of Canada and the United States. His team has won multiple international championship games a year.
