Tyler Sumpter (Paiute) Scores a Career-High 28 Points for Haskell Indian Nations University in 80-67 Win over Ottawa

OTTAWA, Kan. – The No. 18 Haskell Indian Nations University Women’s basketball improved to (13-3) on the season behind a 28 point performance by sophomore Tyler Sumpter (Paiute) as the Lady Indians won 80-67 over the Ottawa Braves.

 

The Braves opened the first quarter on a 7-2 run. Haskell though scored six straight points to take an 8-7 lead on OU with 4:18 left in the quarter.   With 20 seconds left in the first quarter Haskell would retake the lead 19-17. OU though would cut the deficit to one at the end of the quarter.

HINU went on an 8-2 run to start the second quarter, taking a 27-20 lead on the Braves. OU cut into the deficit and after two free throws, the Braves trailed 30-27 with 2:35 left in the half. Haskell though ended the quarter on an 8-0 run and took a 38-27 lead into the locker room.

In the third quarter, OU kept cutting into the HINU lead and with 49 seconds on the clock, two free throws by Grammer cut the deficit to 55-53. In the final minute of the quarter the two teams exchanged free throws and Haskell took a 58-55 lead into the fourth quarter.

Ottawa opend the fourth quarter with a bucket and HINU answered by going on a 9-0 run and taking a 67-57 lead on the Braves with 5:04 left in regulation. A 3-pt field goal stopped OU’s scoreless streak and put the Braves within 67-60. Haskell though would go on another run, 11-3, and increased its lead to 78-63 with 37 seconds on the clock. OU was able to get within 12 points, 79-67. That would be all the closer the Braves would get though, as OU fell to Haskell 80-67.

Haskell shot 37% from the field and 33% from behind the arc. While Sumpter led with 28 points for the Indians, Cerissa Honena scored 16 points, Kortney Meat had 9 followed with Arnetia Begay with 7 and Brandi Buffalo had 6.
