Trevor Morrison (Ojibwe): Leading The Way For The North Woods Grizzlies

By Dan Ninham (Oneida)

Trevor Morrison is a senior two-sport athlete at North Woods High School in Cook, Minnesota. Cook is located on the west side of the Iron Range in northeastern Minnesota.

“I’m from Nett Lake, MN which is on the Bois Forte reservation,” said Trevor Morrison. “My dad is Travis Morrison and he’s from Bois Forte and my mom is Teri Morrison.”

Trevor plays football and basketball for the North Woods High School Grizzlies. His football positions are defensive end and tight end. “I bring great defensive pressure and even better blocking on offense,” said Trevor. “My team is 3-5 but we just recently moved up a class and are adjusting to the faster pace.”

The Grizzlies won its last two regular season games 40-0 vs. East Central and 26-8 vs. Chisholm. The first round of the playoffs are coming next week.

The qualities of being a high school athlete may be different for each athlete. Trevor believes his best qualities are being: Fearless – “I go out every game without fear of the other team”; Respectful – “although I do not fear the opponent, I respect them that they come out with the same attitude”; and, Leadership – “I am a captain on the team and I help guide them on how to do things right on and off the field.”

College is in the plans and decisions will be coming soon. “Athletics have taught me a lot especially discipline. They keep me busy and out of trouble. They also clear my mind, whenever I’m in a tough spot, sports help me relax and forget,” added Trevor.

My parents have influenced me by allowing me to follow my passions and play sports year round. My elementary basketball coach, Brandon Benner, has also been a big part of my life as he brought us to the Twin Cities for basketball. He would bring us to the state tournament and say this is what we play for. And finally my older cousin, Jaylen Strong, was a great role model to me when I was younger.

Head Grizzlies Football Coach John Jirik said: “Trevor has been a top student/athlete since he entered our school in 7th grade. Trevor carries an A average and places academics and character above all else when in school. When help is needed for any activity Trevor is the student that does not need to be asked for help. In our small K-12 school, most of our young kids know Trevor and often want to give him a fist bump or hug. Trevor understands the impact that he has on our youth and strives to be a positive example. Trevor is a perfect example of the ideal student-athlete. We could see Trevor’s skill and ability come to life his 10th grade year in football. He was a vital part of our State basketball team and has been a top player in our district ever since. We very rarely see a student-athlete succeed at a high rate in two sports at the highest level. Trevor has accomplished this feat and will always be remembered as one of North Woods top student-athletes through his accomplishments.”
