Tigers too much for Riverhawks as NSU Falls in MIAA; Fontana Tate (Cherokee) Finishes Career with NSU

(Kansas City, Missouri) – Northeastern State University  women’s basketball concluded their season in the quarterfinals of the MIAA conference tournament by running into conference powerhouse Fort Hays State University who finished off the upset minded Riverhawks by a final score of 79-53.

The #9 seed Northeastern State had previously upset the #8 Washburn Ichabods on Tuesday by holding them to just 27% shooting for the game.

In the quarterfinal game, Fort Hays State would return the favor by limiting the Hawks to just 34% for the game while Tigers shot 53%. The Tigers were led by 6-4 Center Kate Lehman, who had a game high 24 points on 12 of 13 shooting.

Senior guard Chelsey Beathard lead Northeastern State with 12 points followed by Bria Pierce who had 11 points on the afternoon. Senior guard Fontana Tate (Cherokee Nation) finished her final college game of her career just 3 points but had a team-high 4 assists.

In the first half, The Tigers started hot from behind the arc while the Hawks couldn’t get a shot to drop.

At the 15:55 Mark Fort Hays held a 12 to 2 lead with all of their points coming from the three-point line.

NSU would not add another shot until the 11 minute mark but by then the Tigers would be up by fifteen points that would eventually balloon to a 33 point lead. FHSU would go into the half with a 43-19 lead.

The second half would be a better shooting half for NSU but the Tigers would match point for point everything the Hawks threw at them.

Northeastern State finishes the season at (12-18) while Fort Hays State improves to (29-2) and advance to the semi-final round where they will face either the Missouri Southern Lions or the Central Missouri Jennies.
