Shyla Latone (Zuni Pueblo) named 2018 San Diego County Hoops Report Player Of the Year

Shyla Latone Shines in Senior Season

By Quinn Mayfield – San Diego County Hoops Report

There was a lot of quality female basketball players around the County this year but one 5’5 point guard stood taller than the rest. Bontia Vista’s Shyla Latone was on a mission this year. Along the way she happened to have one of the best seasons any girl has had in San Diego Section history. That is why she is our 2018 San Diego County Hoops Report Player Of the Year.

Miss Latone is averaging 37.45 points per game. That is currently good for second best in the nation. It is also 13.2ppg more than the next leading scorer in San Diego. She has played in all 33 games her team has competed in. Dumping in a total of 446 made shots and 245 made free throws giving her 1,236 points on the season. That scoring total is 2nd best in San Diego Section history with the State Playoffs ahead of her. During her scoring rampage Shyla set the sections single game scoring record. On January 19th at Hilltop High School she cashed in for an astonishing 76 points.

Latone has led her Lady Barons squad, 27-6, to their first league title in ten years and a CIF Section Division 1 title. Her scoring alone accounts for 48.7% of her teams total points. If you add in her assists and assume they are all 2 point field goals, Bonita shoots the 3 fairly well, she is responsible for 59% of her teams scoring. The numbers are record breaking but the star senior passes the eye test as well.

Shyla puts on a show every time she gets on the court. Staying in front of her has been a challenge for every defender this season. Her quickness and ball handling skills alone has caused an opponent to hit the floor on a nightly basis. Along with dribbling around all 5 defenders for layups she hits step back 3’s from 28+ feet on double teams and drops And1 mixtape worthy passes. Shyla Latone is without a doubt the most entertaining player to watch this year as well.

You can watch Shyla Latone play this Wednesday in the first round of the Division 3 State playoffs. Her Lady Barons are the #1 seed and play against #16 Hamilton from the Los Angeles City Section. Game time is 7pm at Bonita Vista High School.
