Haskell Indian Nations University Basketball Teams Fall to the Baker Wildcats; Haskell wears Nike “N7” uniforms to commemorate Native American Heritage Month

by Reid Williams,

(Lawrence, Kansas) –  The Haskell Indian Nations University Lady Indians would face off with the Wildcats of Baker University on Nike “N7” night at Coffin Complex. Fans filled the gym for the big double header. From the opening tip, Haskell was full of excitement with a large crowd in attendance. Possibly too much excitement, as the Indians would struggle to generate baskets for the entire first half.

Unfortunately, Baker would have no problem scoring in the first two quarters. At the half, Haskell was shooting 33% from the floor and 12% from behind the three point line, which was lowest they have shot all season from behind the arc. Baker was shooting 60% from the floor and had made 50% of their three point attempts.   With Haskell’s starting center Keli Warrior missing her 2nd straight game due to injury, the Indians would struggle to keep Baker out of the paint. The Wildcats would score 30 points in the paint compared to just 16 from HINU. By halftime Baker was up 32-27.

Coming out of the half Haskell would pick up their token pressure full court press and trap at half court looking to cut into the Wildcats lead. The Indians would force 20 turnovers on the night leading to easier shots down the stretch. Their second half shooting percentages would rise to 42% from the floor and 37% from 3. Unfortunately this increase in shooting percentage wouldn’t be enough. Baker University would spoil N7 night for the Lady Indians winning 58-51.

Despite the loss Haskell head coach Shane Flanagan, said “I’m happy with the way they battled. This team is going to get better. … I’m happy with where we’re at right now.”

Baker’s leading scorer of the night would be Caitlin Modesett (17 points) while Haskell would be led by Kortney Meat (13 points) and Arnetia Begay (12 points). The Wildcats improve to 7-1 on the year while the Indians fall to 8-3.

HINU will look to bounce back on Nov. 28th at home against the University of Science and Arts of Oklahoma. Tip off will be at 3:00 P.M.

Haskell Men Slow Start Too Much to Overcome

The men’s basketball teams would close out the double header at Coffin Complex. The Indians would win the tip, thanks to senior forward Dallas Rudd(4 points), but after a pair of quick fouls from Wilber Everett (11 points) the Wildcats would jump out to an early 20-5 lead. Haskell would call a timeout to regroup and go on a run of their own, thanks in large part to a couple of baskets from Joe Moudy (12 points). By the time the first half had ended, Haskell would cut the lead to 6 trailing 41-35.

In the second half, HINU would rely on Duelle Gore (23 points 10 rebounds) and Tsalidi Sequoyah (15 points). The Indians would keep it close through the entire 2nd half, but never take the lead. Manuel Barnes (21 points) and the Wildcats would be too much for Haskell to handle. Haskell would foul at the end of the game, trying to extend the number of possessions, but Baker would make 13 of their 18 free throws in the second half and slip away with a 92-83 victory over Haskell.

Haskell now falls to 2-7 for the year, while Baker improves to 4-3. HINU will have a chance to pick up a win on the road when they travel to Golden, Colorado on Nov. 27th to play Fort Lewis College.
