Guadalupe Corn (Menominee): Shot Put Bronze Medalist at the 2021 Wisconsin Track and Field Meet

By Dan Ninham

A shot put thrower in the 2021 Wisconsin State Track and Field Meet set a goal to throw 40’ or more. She met her goal at exactly 40’ and made it to the podium earning a bronze medal.

Guadalupe Corn, 18, is a member of the Menominee Nation and Bear Clan.

“I graduated from the Menominee Indian High School,” said Guadalupe. “I will going to college this fall but at the moment I am undecided where I will attend.”

“I’ve been in track and field since I was in seventh grade,” said Guadalupe. “It was always a goal for me since then to go to the State Meet for a field event. My freshman year I was All-Conference for shot put and since then my goal of throwing over 40 feet is what pushed me every year.”

“Where I come from we are very proud to be Warriors and accomplish goals and keep going and pushing to be better,” said Guadalupe. “That was always instilled in me, and even though I am a female I am still a Warrior.”

During the recent Wisconsin State Track and Field Meet, Guadalupe had a goal to throw 40’ or more. She accomplished this goal.

“My mentor is Christopher Clache,” said Guadalupe. “He’s always there to push, guide, coach and be there for me for any guidance I need. If it wasn’t for Coach, I wouldn’t have been a finalist in the state competition, and I owe a lot to him.”

“I have had the pleasure of being her throw coach since she was in seventh grade,” said Christopher Clache, head track and football coach at Menominee Indian HS. “To see her progress over the last five years has been an amazing experience. She has exceeded every expectation I had for her. Her commitment to this sport has been second to none! This was her second time qualifying for State but her first time getting on the podium.”

“Guadalupe is known as ‘Lupe’ by all of us,” said Christopher. “She was not the biggest thrower. At 5’1″ she gave up an immense amount of reach in a sport dominated by much larger opponents. She made up for it with her hip and leg strength, her explosive starts, and her dedication to learning the techniques to maximize her distance.”

“Lupe also took on a leadership role this season and passed on her knowledge to our younger throwers,” said Christopher. “They definitely looked up to her. She will be missed dearly by us all. She brought an uplifting spirit to all of the team. I can’t imagine a season without her!”

“I didn’t grow up in the best of situations,” said Guadalupe. “I overcame all of that and pushed through it to get me where I am today as a successful athlete.”

“Family is a big part of where I come from today and my mom pushed me a lot to make sure I would succeed,” said Guadalupe.
