Spring, Tx— May 16, 2019 — Former World Champion and 2016 Rio Olympics Alternate, Ashton Locklear (Lumbee Tribe) , has made the decision to end her gymnastics career.

“It is with a lot of emotion that I share with you, that I have decided to announce my retirement from gymnastics, shared Locklear.” “This is a sport that I have loved since I was 2 years old, and I am grateful for the opportunities that it has given me.”

Locklear underwent two major surgeries within a 7-month period, that coupled with previous back injuries have proven career ending. In November 2017 she underwent shoulder surgery and in June 2018, she underwent major knee surgery. “There isn’t enough time to adequately heal from those major invasive procedures in order to prepare for any major competition,” shared Dr. Tony De Ramus of Sandstone Health, located in Spring, TX.”

“I am so grateful for all the love and support I have received throughout my career. I am grateful to have had the last year at World Champions Centre being coached by Laurent and Cecile Landi,” shared Locklear.
