Former Red Cloud Standouts Stevi Fallis and Allison Richards Lead Northeast Community College to Season Opening Win

BEATRICE, Neb. – The Northeast Community College women’s basketball team opened their regular season on the road Tuesday night in Beatrice, Nebraska in a battle with Southeast Community College.

The Hawks (1-0) were down 39-31 at half and fell behind in the contest by as many as 11. A big third-quarter comeback gave the Hawks a 46-45 edge entering the final frame. Freshmen Allison Richards (Pine Ridge, S.D.) and Stevi Fallis (Pine Ridge, S.D.) hit back-to-back threes with a little over six minutes to go in the game to extend the Northeast lead to 54-49.

The defense would hold from there and the Hawks were able to start their season with a solid road win.

HEAR FROM THE HAWKS COACH:

Head women’s basketball coach Matt Svehla on the rally his team made:

“I think we just settled down a little bit in the second half and played more sound basketball on both ends of the floor,” Svehla said. “We gave up too many offensive rebounds in the first half and we were not where we needed to be defensively. Those are probably the two areas that we cleaned up in the second half, but we also made some timely baskets.”

Svehla on his young group getting a huge win in their first regular-season game:

“Southeast is a good basketball team and for us to come in here and get a win was great,” Svehla said. “The girls played hard and I love how we battled to the end. This was a good win for us.”

STAT SHEET:
