BREA, Calif. (UNLVRebels.com) – The UNLV women’s cross country team competed in its first meet of the 2023 season Saturday morning at the Mark Covert Classic in the Open 5K, which was held at Carbon Canyon Regional Park.

Fifth-year senior LaKyla Yazzie (Navajo) paced the Rebel runners with a top-30 finish with a time of 18:48.0.

Other Rebels with strong performances were freshman Eliana Rivera, who set a personal record by 37 seconds with a time of 19:42.7, while sophomore Abigail Danlag (20.05.1) and senior Ellen Wise (20:06.0) also set personal bests.

A total of nine student-athletes competed at the event for the Rebels, which marked the first competition under new UNLV track & field/cross country head coach Carmelita Jeter and cross country assistant coach Adam Meyer.

“It was very exciting to watch Coach Meyer lead our cross country team today,” Jeter said. “We had plenty of personal bests, which is always exciting to see their hard work pay off. This is only the beginning for this new team. Go Rebels!”
