Ember Sloan (Navajo) has career-high 24 Points for Haskell Indian Nations University in 87-46 Win over Bethany College

by Reid Williams

(Lawrence, Kansas) – In their first home game of the new year, the Haskell Lady Indians (13-3) would take care of business when Bethany College (4-12) visited Coffin Complex. Haskell would coast to an 87-46 victory, in large part due to a career high of 24 points from freshman guard Ember Sloan.

Bethany would win the opening tip and score the first basket of the game. The Indians would respond with a 13-3 run and never look back. By the end of the first quarter, Haskell would lead 22-8.

Haskell’s 14 point first quarter lead would only shrink by one in the second quarter. Going into the half, Haskell would have the advantage, 38-25.

Coming out of half time, Haskell would pick up the pressure. Bethany couldn’t handle the constant on-ball pressure and would end up committing 27 turnovers, for the night. Bethany College would score only 7 points in the third quarter, compared to 33 for HINU.

Haskell’s lead would grow to 46 points by the 6:38 mark in the fourth quarter, despite their starters sitting out for a majority of the quarter. When the final buzzer would sound the Lady Indians had cruised to a 41 point win.

Tonight would be a career night for Ember Sloan (24 points) and Brandi Buffalo (13 points) while Tinaya Murphy (16 points) and Cerissa Honena-Reyes (18 points) would post season highs in points. The Haskell bench would score as many points as the entire Bethany team, 46 points. HINU would also convert 33 points off of Bethany’s turnovers, and shoot 50% from the floor on the way to their lopsided victory.

Haskell improves to 14-3 for the year and will begin preparing for a four game road trip starting at Sterling College on Jan. 13th. Haskell’s next home game will be on Jan. 30th at 3:00 p.m. when they take on York College.
