By Dan Ninham (Oneida)

“I am a Descendant of the Fond du Lac Band of Lake Superior Ojibwe, I am from Cass Lake, MN but I currently live In Grand Portage, MN,” said Devon Premo. “My mothers name is Shawna Premo and she is an enrolled member of the Fond du Lac Tribe. My fathers name is Robin Premo and he is not enrolled in any Tribe.”

Devon Premo plays on both sides of the ball for the Cook County High School Varsity Football team. He is a hard working dedicated athlete and strives to make the team the best it can be. Devon is aggressive as an offensive tackle, and as a defensive end. He is a leader for the team, always encouraging his teammates to play well and keep pushing. Devon displays positive role model behavior on and off the field that allows the team to have success every time they step foot on the field.

“Growing up surrounded by my culture and being able to learn valuable lessons made me proud of who I am today,” said Devon. “I believe that as a student athlete I apply the seven Grandfather teachings in the classroom, on the field, and outside of school. My tribal core values have allowed me to become a well respected, dedicated, and encouraging young man.”

“I plan on going to college after I graduate from high school. University of Minnesota-Duluth is at the top of my list. I am currently undecided on a major but plan to start my college career with my general classes. I would like to play college football or baseball. Athletics are helping me immensely with these goals because it is making me a hard working student first and foremost. Also getting me physically in shape to battle for a position on a college team,” added Devon.

“My biggest influence is my older brother Bryce Premo,” said Devon. “I have always looked up to him. We have a close relationship.  Knowing that he is in the stands watching me with my parents no matter how far away the game is means so much to me. And of course my parents have always been my biggest supporters and have always taught me to never quit. Finish what you start, play hard and with heart.”

“Making it to the playoffs for Cook County football and playing my first year there was amazing,” said Devon. “It was very emotional for me since that had never happened in my football career in high school.”
