BHSU Yellow Jackets Drop Season-Opener 57-52; Chelsey Biegler (Cheyenne River Sioux) Leads with 16 Points

RAPID CITY, S.D. – After shooting just 25 percent from the field, the Black Hills State University women’s basketball team fell 57-52 to South Dakota Mines Tuesday night in Rapid City, South Dakota.

On the opening for the Yellow Jackets, Chelsey Biegler (Cheyenne River Sioux) scored 16 points while Taylor Trohkimoinen added 14 points as BHSU falls to 0-1 in the nonconference portion of the season.

Kahlie Peterson led South Dakota Mines with 17 points as the Hardrockers improve to 1-2 on the young season.

Down 45-33 with 7:36 remaining, the Yellow Jackets went on a 9-0 run to pull within three points at 45-42.

The run began with a pair of free throws by Trohkimoinen and continued with a jumper from Dakota Barrie. With 5:30 remaining in the game Dakota Barrie found Biegler for an open jump shot as the Yellow Jackets started to feel the momentum.

After drawing an offensive foul, Black Hills State worked for an open shot when Trohkimoinen lined up at the top of the key and sank a trey for the 45-42 score with 4:54 remaining in the game.

However a three-point play by the Hardrockers stopped the Yellow Jacket momentum and rebuilt the lead to eight points with 1:53 remaining.

Black Hills State was unable to recover before falling 57-52.

The Hardrockers won the rebound battle 32-31 led by Devyn Asche with eight. Barrie led the Yellow Jackets with six. Biegler accounted for four of the six Yellow Jacket assists while Trohkimoinen had three steals.

The Yellow Jackets look to rebound Friday night at Northern State in a 6 p.m. matchup in Aberdeen, South Dakota.
