Nina Bitsilly is Navajo and recently completed her senior year at Haskell Indian Nations University. She was on the cross country, and indoor and outdoor track and field teams.
“I have gained from the past 2024 cross country going into 2025 track season was being confident in leadership skills,” said Nina Bitsilly. “The main goal for this team was to keep a safe community, where all teammates accomplished personal and team goals.”
“The most beautiful thing I love about being a student-athletic is setting myself up for success. I do the best I can to be a role model for my community. When I put my pride aside, I am grateful for all the coaches, staff, family, and friends around me. I like to make my people proud, especially my ancestors,” added Bitsilly.
“(Coach) Clay Mayes is a smart guy and knows how to train a runner,” said Bitsilly.
“You can tell him any personal goals you have, if you are willing, he will help you. He put his focus on his runners because he wants the best for the Indigenous community. Clay does not just put all his focus in the sport but also in our education. He pushes his student-athletes to not only be successful at racing, but first in the classroom.”
“One of the best ways I have learned how to deal with adversity is to always pray, to continue with strength,” said Bitsilly. “Dealing with adversity is not easy, especially if you have a friend that is not on the same path as you.”
“College comes with a lot of challenges dealing with mental health. Do not be hard on yourself, be kind to yourself. Do what makes your parents proud,” added Bitsilly.
“After I am done with college, I have always wanted to work in the hospital,” said Bitsilly. “I like to be a part of a working team that gives their time for other’s needs.”
“This summer I plan to volunteer some time at one of the hospitals in Lawrence, Kansas. I plan on being around my team during this time too, including new recruits,” added Bitsilly.
