Recently, LaBelle LaFrance competed in the Bill Pickett Invitational Rodeo Finals on September 19–20, 2025, at The Show Place Arena in Maryland (DMV), where she won the first round and finished second overall in the aggregate.
LaBelle shared, “Rodeo is a unique experience that goes beyond competition; it celebrates community and Black cowboy heritage. For me, it was about nerves, adrenaline, and a sense of pride. Running my horse into the arena, hearing cheers, and continuing a tradition made it an unforgettable experience. Winning was the bonus, but the real reward was being with others who love and respect the sport like I do.”
LaBelle is Tábaahí born for Naakaii łizhinii. Her maternal grandparents are Tsé níjíikíní, and her paternal grandparents are Naakaii łizhinii.
Over the past four years, LaBelle has been on the Dean’s List, earned her associate degree, and been a two-time finalist in the Bill Pickett Invitational Rodeo. She has also interned at LaChachere Music Group in Houston, TX, and Nashville, TN.
NTU has transformed her view on learning and leadership. She now views education as a means to foster community, innovate, and give back, rather than merely acquiring skills. The inclusive environment, diverse student body, and research and outreach opportunities have helped her grow both personally and professionally. She has become more confident, culturally aware, and driven to make a difference beyond academics.
“I am grateful to my family and community for their constant support and encouragement, reminding me of who I am and where I come from. I also thank my professors and peers at NTU, who believed in me and motivated me to reach my potential. Their support empowered me to overcome challenges and stay focused on my goals,” LaBelle said.
She credits her success mainly to persistence and self-discipline. Even in moments of doubt, she remained focused and organized, seizing every learning opportunity. “That consistency made a significant difference,” she explained.
Her role at NTU has been both fulfilling and demanding. It has helped her grow both academically and professionally, while teaching her to manage her responsibilities and seize opportunities.
“I appreciate my colleagues and classmates for their support and teamwork, which makes each day more meaningful. I especially thank my family for encouraging me to work harder and always reminding me of my goals. Their support has been crucial to my success at NTU,” LaBelle concluded.
