Nicole Yazzie (Navajo) joins Weber State Women’s Basketball as Associate Head Coach

OGDEN – Weber State Women’s Basketball is excited to welcome Nicole Yazzie to the Wildcats coaching staff as an associate head coach.

“I am extremely excited to add Coach Yazzie to our staff,” said head coach Jenteal Jackson.

“She aligns well with the direction we are headed and the vision we have for our program. Nicole adds many years of experience and success. She is an elite coach, recruiter and person, who I have no doubt will elevate our women’s basketball program here at Weber State.”

Yazzie arrives at Weber State after nine seasons with Utah Tech University, where she served the past two years as associate head coach.

Yazzie helped lead the Trailblazers to a 19-12 record during the 2024-25 season, the program’s best mark since the 2019-20 season, which was its last season at the NCAA D-II level. The Trailblazers also qualified for the 2023 Western Athletic Conference Tournament, where they posted their first ever Division I postseason victory.

During the 2023-24 season, Yazzie helped lead Utah Tech to an 18-14 overall record, including a 12-8 mark in Western Athletic Conference play, which was good for fourth place in the conference standings and a first round bye into the 2024 WAC Tournament.

Prior to her coaching at Utah Tech, Yazzie served as a women’s basketball assistant coach and sports information director at Montana State-Northern (MSUN) from 2014-16. While at MSUN, Yazzie helped lead the Skylights to consecutive NAIA tournament appearances, including the Elite Eight in 2015. She coached Frontier Conference MVP and Defensive MVP in both 2015 and 2016. Prior to MSUN, Yazzie served as a varsity assistant coach at Corner Canyon High School in Draper, Utah, during the 2013-14 season.

“I am beyond grateful for this opportunity to be teaming up in purple again with Coach Jackson, this time at Weber State University,” said Yazzie.

“My excitement is through the roof when I think about serving alongside this staff, coaching players with such positive energy, and the encouraging atmosphere surrounding Weber State women’s basketball. I firmly believe Weber State women’s basketball is trending in the right direction and can win Big Sky Championships here. Coach Jackson is as great of a coach as she is a human. I’m thankful for this opportunity to learn and lead with her. My family is thrilled to be part of Weber State Athletics and the community as a whole. Go Wildcats!”

Before coaching, Yazzie played four seasons at Westminster from 2009-13. She led the Griffins to four consecutive NAIA tournament appearances, on her way to becoming the all-time leader in 3-point field goals made and career free throw percentage at Westminster. She earned first team All-American honors as a senior and was a four-time All-Frontier Conference first team member. Yazzie earned her bachelor’s degree in psychology from Westminster in 2013.

Yazzie prepped at Bingham High School, where she was a four-year starter at point guard. During her time with the Miners, the team went 85-11 and won the 2007 Utah Class 5A State Championship. She averaged 7.74 points per game during her prep career and was named First Team All-State twice (2009 Salt Lake Tribune, 2008 Deseret News). Deseret News also named her Second Team All-State in 2009 and 2007 following an Honorable Mention All-State in 2006.

After winning the 2007 state championship, Yazzie was named the tournament’s MVP. She is Bingham’s career leader in 3-point field goals made and ranked fifteenth in the state as a senior with her 1.04 makes per game.

Yazzie and her wife Courtney have children Griffin, Maison and Mille and two dogs Duke and Cubby.
