Junior Davion Jeffries (Mvskoke Creek) claimed OU’s first victory of the dual but Sooners would fall to West Virginia, 12-24

MORGANTOWN, W. Va. – In its first Big 12 dual of the season, the No. 18 Oklahoma wrestling team fell to West Virginia, 24-12, inside WVU Coliseum on Thursday night.

The Sooners earned three bout wins in the match, including a win by fall from senior Dawaylon Barnes.

Junior Davion Jeffries (Mvskoke Creek) claimed OU’s first victory of the dual, defeating Kyler Rea by 4-1 decision at 149 pounds. After a scoreless first period, Jeffries recorded an escape and a takedown to hold a 3-0 lead in the second. He added the riding-time point to claim the Sooners’ first match points.

At 165 pounds, Barnes recorded his third win by fall of the season, pinning Nick Kiussis in 5:30 to earn six points for the Sooners.

In the next bout, No. 13 Yoanse Mejias claimed a 6-4 decision over Parker VonEgidy at 174 pounds. The Sooner recorded two takedowns in the first period and added on another in the second to earn his 15th win of the season.

In the first bout of the dual, No. 17 Christian Moody was pinned by No. 19 Zeke Moisey at 125 pounds. At 133 pounds, Jake Rubio dropped a 4-2 decision to Matthew Schmitt. Mike Longo fell to Christian Monserrat by 8-2 decision at 141 pounds. Justin Thomas was downed by Zachary Moore in a 12-5 decision at 157 pounds.

At 184 pounds, Matthew Waddell fell to Brenden McRill by 7-4 decision. Senior Andrew Dixon dropped a 3-1 decision to No. 5 Jake Smith in the 197-pound match. At heavyweight, Connor Webb was downed by Brandon Ngati in a 3-2 decision.

The Sooners return to action on Sunday as they face Pittsburgh at 1 p.m. CT
