Ava Battese (Comanche/PBPN) added 15 Points as Cameron University women defeat Midwestern State 73-56

LAWTON – The Cameron women’s basketball team used a strong second half to cruise to a 73-56 victory over Midwestern State on Tuesday evening.

The Aggies led by as much as 19 points heading towards their fifth win in a row over the Mustangs. CU had a great day at the glass, out-rebounding MSU 49-31.

Jamie Bonnarens led the floor with 26 points marking her eighth game this season scoring 20 or more points.

Ava Battese (Comanche/PBPN) added 15, Parfitt McNair 12 and Amaka Nwakamma 11 points. Nwakamma had a team best five steals, and McNair a team best six assists. Lejha Smith totaled nine rebounds and two blocks.

MSU’s Chelcie Kizart led her squad with 11 points as the lone Mustang in double digits.

Cameron had a cold start to the game as they shot 26 percent from the field in the first half while going 2 for 15 from out deep. Meanwhile, MSU shot 52 percent on the floor and made 2 of 7 treys.

Cameron kept in contention with the Mustangs who would lead by as much as ten points on several runs of five points by nabbing offensive 14 offensive rebounds to MSU’s two in the opening half. CU trailed 22-26 at the break.

The Aggies came out of the locker room on fire as they started the last half with a Bonnarens three-pointer. CU rattled off seven straight points to tie the game a 33. After one more tie, Cameron scored nine unanswered points to grab a 42-25 advantage, never letting MSU see the lead again.

Cameron outscored the Mustangs 31-13 in the third quarter, made four three-pointers and went 7 for 9 at the line. CU ended the third period on three straight treys to lead 57-46 heading into the final period.

CU didn’t let off the gas pedal and took their largest lead of 19 points with under two minutes to go. The Aggies would win 73-56 moving to 7-10 overall and bumped above the .500 mark in the league with a 5-4 Lone Star Conference record.

The Mustangs are now 9-6 overall and 6-3 in the league.
